Search interest surged in July 2026. The controlling records describe earlier load-loss events—and a specific reliability problem that should not be confused with an air permit, a new outage or proof of harm.

The phrase “Northern Virginia data center disconnect” is trending now, but the primary records reviewed for this brief describe a July 10, 2024 event and a separate February 2025 event—not a newly verified July 2026 incident.

Time boundary

Current search attention is not the event date. A newly published article can make an older technical record trend again.

What the official record says

A NERC filing to FERC identifies two Eastern Interconnection data-center load-loss events affecting Virginia: approximately 1,500 MW in Loudoun County in July 2024 and approximately 1,800 MW across Loudoun and Fairfax counties in February 2025.

For the July 2024 event, the same filing describes a 1,500 MW loss exclusively involving data-center load, coincident with clearing a normal 230 kV line fault. It says the event was spread across 60 load points and 25 substations.

A May 7, 2026 PJM filing gives additional context: on July 10, 2024, a lightning strike caused a transmission-level fault in Dominion’s Northern Virginia territory, followed by a sudden 1,500 MW reduction as data centers switched to on-site backup power.

“Load loss” is not the same as lost generation

In these records, load means electricity demand. A 1,500 MW load loss means a large block of demand stopped drawing from the grid nearly at once. That is different from a generator unexpectedly ceasing to produce 1,500 MW.

PJM’s filing says the data centers switched to on-site backup power. It does not name the facilities or identify whether the backup source at any particular site was a battery, engine, turbine or another configuration.

The filing uses the event to illustrate why large-load behavior matters to frequency, voltage and stability studies. It does not say that the event caused a cascading outage or establish environmental harm.

What the current connection record asks for

Dominion Energy Virginia’s April 2026 interconnection requirements now request detailed data-center voltage and frequency performance, the thresholds at which a site disconnects, the reconnection method, reconnection delay and ramp rate, and the share of load that could transfer to other server farms.

Those fields show what the utility currently asks applicants to disclose for system studies. Blank template fields are not public operating measurements for an individual campus.

Permit boundary

A Virginia DEQ air permit can identify authorized backup equipment and limits. It cannot establish the timing, cause or electrical behavior of this grid event. The grid record and the air-permit record answer different questions.

What these documents do not establish

  • A new Northern Virginia disconnect in July 2026.
  • The names or owners of the data centers involved.
  • A customer blackout, cascading outage, violation or harm.
  • The type or number of backup generators that operated.
  • Actual generator operating hours, fuel use or emissions.
